Dubbo has a down to earth country feel. There is an open, friendly welcome from the locals, many beautiful historic buildings and big open parklands to enjoy. The long summers are filled with events and festivals (see attractions and activities). There is a large shopping area and many restaurants and galleries in the town; and the famous open range zoo, plus other attractions such as the Warrumbungle National Park, wine growing areas and Wellington Caves and Phosphate Mine, not far away from town.

The area around Dubbo is known for wheat and wool production, also stock – rising. Dubbo is a major centre for stock selling. Originally the Wiradjum people occupied the land; the first reported Europeans passed through in 1818. Dubbo really began to grow after 1947 and it became a city in 1966. It is currently a prosperous and expanding city.

It is good to have personal transport in Dubbo, but the bus station on Erskine Street has busses stopping by which travel further north or south (linking Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane). In April or May some work opportunities exist in Dubbo, cotton picking or cotton ginning. From November to January cotton chipping provides work. In October through to December some seasonal work becomes available harvesting grain.

Dubbo is always worth visiting as it accommodates its guests well, and provides an enjoyable example of life in an inland Australian country town.
